Warwick Castle’s History

Warwick Castle is a mediaeval castle in Warwick. In fact, Warwick town was built around the castle.

But what is Warwick Castle famous for? Well, the castle is best known for its role in English history. It served in William the Conqueror’s plan to assert his control over England. However, Warwick Castle’s history doesn’t stop there.

The Origins of Warwick Castle (1068)

Warwick Castle was built in 1068, two years after the Conqueror’s victory at Hastings. It was an important site to William due to its location in the centre of England, and it also gave him control over a critical section of Britain’s longest Roman Road, Fosse Way.

The Castle has had some impressive residents. After William the Conqueror’s death, ownership passed through the following families:

  • The Beaumonts
  • The Beauchamps
  • The Nevilles
  • The Dudleys
  • The Grevilles

Unfortunately, nothing of Warwick’s original motte and bailey castle remains. That said, the Mound where the wooden keep sat remains and is the oldest part of Warwick Castle you can still see today.

Interesting and Fun Facts About Warwick Castle

We’ve covered Warwick Castle history; now, what are some lesser-known facts about this site?

Why is Warwick Castle Built on a Hill?

Warwick Castle was built on a hill, making it more difficult to attack. Hills were a fantastic defence, and being positioned on one could tire attacking soldiers out before they’d even got to the top.

Belfry towers (wooden structures that soldiers used to climb fortifications) were also impossible to use when the opponent was atop a hill.
